Question

Which rules apply when you work with electricity?

Solution

The five safety rules according to VDE apply, together with supplementary laboratory safety rules.

Five safety rules (VDE 0105-100)

  1. Disconnect from mains!
  2. Secure against reconnection!
  3. Verify that the installation is dead!
  4. Carry out earthing and short-circuiting! *
  5. Provide protection from adjacent live parts! *

*) Not strictly required for voltages below 48 V (protective extra-low voltage):

Supplementary laboratory safety rules

  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Use only tested, suitable tools
  • Take measurements on live parts only when necessary
  • Keep safety distances
  • Operate devices only in technically perfect condition
  • Work only under the supervision of a qualified electrician
  • Keep your workplace tidy and clean
  • Know what to do in an emergency
  • Report accidents and near misses immediately
